Kindergarten Class!

Dear Parents,

This week, during religion classes, the children learned about Moses and the Ten Commandments. On Monday they were invited to visit their mass buddies’ classroom where they enjoyed seeing the 8^th graders’ saint presentations. Each child received a prayer card.

In language arts our class worked with building and blending words using the consonants m, s, r, t, p and c, and the short vowel a. The new high frequency word was "he". The children learned to write a "caption sentence." The pre-codable reader this week was "My Dad". The leveled readers were "Sam Can" and "To the Top". We also worked more with the –an and –ap word families.

The topic of our science lessons was "nocturnal animals". The children made booklets about bats, a bat mobile, and pictures of owls.

On Tuesday I read two stories – "The Biggest Pumpkin" and "The Littlest Pumpkin". The children then voted, by secret ballot, for their favorite. We tallied the votes and discovered that 11 people liked "The Biggest Pumpkin" and 9 people preferred "The Littlest Pumpkin".

In math we learned about the concepts "as many as", "more", "fewer", "most" and "fewest". The children practiced making groups of objects to illustrate these concepts, and completed several worksheets.

We visited the Book Fair on Thursday morning to preview the books and to make wish lists. You are invited to join our class when we visit the Book Fair again during our library time on Monday (9:45 – 10:15). Please check in at the main office so that we will know to meet you in lobby.

Next week we will have a short week. There will be no school on Thursday and Friday, November 13 and 14. I hope to see you at our scheduled conference.
